This 1647 document records twenty-nine individuals penanced by the Tribunal of the Inquisition of Mexico for observing the Law of Moses and sentenced to banishment from New Spain. Ordered to travel to Spain and present themselves before the Inquisition of Seville, the individuals came from interconnected communities across Mexico City, Veracruz, Guadalajara, Guatemala, and other parts of New Spain, with many originating in Portugal. The record is particularly valuable for its detailed biographical information, preserving ages, birthplaces, residences, occupations, family relationships, physical descriptions, and, in several cases, examinations for signs of circumcision. It documents entire families accused of practicing Judaism and provides a rare glimpse into the appearance, movement, kinship networks, and forced exile of Crypto-Jews in seventeenth-century Mexico.
